Description:
Sportsradio 610 WIP morning personalities Angelo Cataldi and Wing Bowl Founder Al Morganti are limiting this year’s competitors to amateur eaters only, as opposed to previous contests, which featured professional eaters. Wing Bowl contestants are selected based on their ability to complete various challenging eating stunts before they devour the chicken wings in the annual competition at Wing Bowl.

"Every year, we try to add to the thrills and the craziness of Wing Bowl, and this year we think we have a perfect formula. We will honor our first sports championship in a quarter-century by going back to our roots, by honoring all of the neighborhoods that were such a big part of the Phillies celebration. We want every community, from Mayfair to Mullica Hill, to have a representative competitor at Wing Bowl 17. We want to find a new local champion to challenge the great professionals. And, above all, we want to take that excitement of last October and November and rekindle it on Jan. 30, 2009 at Wing Bowl 17," said WIP Morning Personality Angelo Cataldi who co-founded Wing Bowl with radio partner Al Morganti.

WIP is heading into the local neighborhoods to search for the best eaters and hometown heroes to compete for the coveted title of Wing Bowl Champion. Participants will be qualified through approved on air stunts during the Sportsradio 610 WIP Morning Show or through one of eight "Wing-Offs." Two-time defending champion Joey Chestnut will not compete, as he is deemed a professional eater, which makes him ineligible for this year's event. WIP Wing Bowl 17 continues Philadelphia's neighborhood celebration by paying tribute to true homegrown heroes and the City of Philadelphia's first championship team in 25 years. The Phillies World Series Trophy is scheduled to appear.
